Successful Roof Repair at 8 Cross Street: How I Solved Flat Roof Issues with PVC

Reading Time: 4 minutes

My name is Denis Tchernov, and I’m the head contractor at ID Flat Roof, a roofing company based in Massachusetts. Recently, we completed a PVC flat roof replacement Massachusetts project for a single-family home at 8 Cross Street, Westborough, Massachusetts.

The home had three flat roofs and three sections of architectural shingles. Since the shingles were installed only 5-6 years ago and were in excellent condition, we left them as is. However, the homeowner had been experiencing ongoing problems with the flat roofs, which were initially covered with roll asphalt.

After a thorough inspection, I recommended removing the old roll asphalt and upgrading the flat roofs with a more durable and modern solution—PVC roofing.

Preparing a part of the roof for installing a PVC roof

We carefully removed the aging asphalt and installed a half-inch hoverboard for added insulation and structural stability. On top of this, we laid down a 60-mil white PVC membrane, which is known for its durability and energy-efficient reflective properties. This material helps keep homes cooler during hot weather, a great benefit for Massachusetts homeowners.

Ensuring the Roof’s Integrity

Part of our process includes checking for any signs of rot or damage. In this case, the plywood beneath the old roofing was in great condition, so no replacement was necessary. This saved the homeowner both time and money.

We also installed cone-shaped PVC flashings on all the pipes to ensure a watertight seal, preventing any future leaks—a critical detail for ensuring the long-term health of the roof.

Why PVC Roofing?

Interestingly, the homeowner specifically requested a PVC roof because we had installed the same type of roof on another house just down the street five years ago. That roof has performed exceptionally well, with no issues over the years, and the homeowner was impressed by the results. Confident in the material’s reliability, they decided to move forward with the same option for their own home.

We also installed a new 3-inch drip edge to guide water away from the roof, preventing any potential damage to the home’s structure. Additionally, we replaced the skylight dome, including the entire block and package, ensuring it would match the longevity of the new PVC roof.

One aspect of this project that I’m proud of was the efficiency of our cleanup. We didn’t even need to bring in a dumpster! All debris was loaded into our van and removed, leaving the yard as clean as it was before we started.

Contract and Warranty

The project was completed under an official contract, giving the homeowner peace of mind with clear terms and conditions. At ID Flat Roof, we stand by our work. We offer a 15-year warranty on the workmanship and a lifetime warranty on the PVC roofing itself, ensuring the homeowner is covered for many years to come.
